Kinston Teens Honors First Digital Literacy Corps Graduates at Community Reception
KINSTON, NC — On Tuesday, August 5, Kinston Teens celebrated the graduation of the inaugural cohort of its Digital Literacy Corps, a youth-led initiative aimed at increasing digital access, skills, and leadership among Kinston’s emerging generation of changemakers. The event was held at the Kinston Enterprise Center and brought together families, community partners, and local leaders to recognize the program’s 15 participants.
Launched earlier this year with support from the U.S. Conference of Mayors and expanded with multi-year funding from the State of North Carolina, the Digital Literacy Corps equips youth ages 16-24 with training in digital tools, media creation, job readiness, and community engagement. Participants received a $500 stipend and a certificate of completion for their participation, and will have access to paid internships supporting local nonprofits, small businesses, and civic organizations during the fall of this year.
“Our Digital Literacy Corps is about giving young people the tools and confidence to lead in today’s digital world and tomorrow’s community challenges,” said Chris Suggs, Founder & Executive Director of Kinston Teens. “These students are the next generation technology leaders, community builders, and problem-solvers in Eastern North Carolina.”
During the reception, remarks were offered by Suggs and Courtney Sutton, Digital Literacy Program Coordinator for Kinston Teens, followed by a presentation of certificates and a tour of the Kinston Teens Digital Resource Lab. Guests learned how the Lab and Corps are central components of Kinston Teens’ broader digital equity strategy.
The organization plans to welcome two additional cohorts later this year, continuing its mission to bridge the digital divide and create pathways for opportunity in rural North Carolina.
